Thanks Coach!..I’ll keep climbing that mountain…

This post is dedicated to coaches everywhere…

(especially my dad, former Boston College Coach and former coach for US Marines)

“Football doesn’t build character. It eliminates weak ones.”~ Darrell Royal

I’m feeling like a hypocrite.

I try to write posts that will motivate and inspire but today I feel empty.
Why?
Well…maybe it’s because I’ve lost everything. 10 months unemployed, I can’t collect unemployment and I’ve lost what I’ve worked my whole life for and the future for me is uncertain.

Why does my life have to be so hard?

Who knows…and so today I didn’t want to face the day. Wanted to hide under the covers and wish I’d fall asleep; maybe never to wake up again…
I know….wrong mind set…but honesty is my curse…

Today I had a bad day. I decided depression would be my companion. Then something inside me said, “ENOUGH! GET OVER IT…MOVE ON…IT IS WHAT IT IS..

SO SUCK IT UP…

I then tried to write, hoping it would make me feel better…but nothing could come out of me. I felt empty, nothing to tap into…

I refuse to write something I don’t believe to be true or something that has no meaning to me. Since my well was empty, I decided to borrow from another spring. Movies that inspire and remind the weary spirit that happy endings are always possible…you just have to have the patience, courage, strength and faith, to wait for it. The hard part is waiting for the victory dance. I’ve been waiting for my happy ending for almost a year now and I’m stubborn. I want to be a Titan that the coach would be proud of.

My dad, a linebacker for the Chicago Bears, always told me growing up: “Lu-Angie, life is hard so get tough. Let it roll off your back and get on your knees to pray. Keep the faith, chin up…it will get better…nothing is permanent.”

This same father/daughter talk came when I was in my twenties, struggling to find a job after college. He shared with me a story about one of the toughest times in his life. It was when the Bears traded him after too many knee injuries. He went to a Canadian team and before the season was out, he got hurt again. This time, the doctor told him; “If you want to spend the rest of your life in a wheel chair, then continue to play. My advice is to retire now before your body gives out.”

My dad retired and that broke his heart. He didn’t know what to do with his life. He felt “lost’ for a while. He took a job as a substitute high school teacher and hated it. But that led to coaching football and later he ended up selling sporting goods, being the VP of a company Russel Athletic later bought out and he got to travel and fit players with uniforms (like the Red Sox when they went to Florida for spring training).

I think about my dad a lot these days. He died 3 years ago. I miss him. He was my go- to person when life got hard. I know if he were alive today, he’d be telling me to ‘suck it up…this life aint for whine-babies…it is what it is, so make the best of it…but don’t give up…don’t stop dreaming and believing that it WILL get better…Believe in yourself and make it happen…”

“Positive thinking is the key to success in business, education, pro football, anything that you can mention. I go out there thinking that I’m going to complete every pass.”~Ron Jaworski

After a day spent feeling sorry for myself, I decided that coaches, like my dad , make great shrinks. Think about it…

Coaches are just that…

They coach. They deliver their message with power, might and undeniable strength. They can  make the tired player believe he can play one more round, or the loser feel like he’s a winner. Since I couldn’t talk to my dad, I needed to listen to some other coaches and Denzel Washington came to mind…

I decided to Google the word “inspiration”

I found some movie clips that I needed to watch. It helped me feel better.

This Post isn’t for the lucky ones who can’t relate; so click away if you haven’t by now. You probably don’t need any coach telling you to get off the bench, get tough and believe in yourself. But I needed to hear it.

This post is for the unemployed who can relate.

If you had a day like me, where it was tough to face the day…watch the clips…I hope it makes you feel better…

Until tomorrow dear friend….Didn’t Annie say the sun would come out tomorrow?

Let’s cross our fingers….
