“To gain that which is worth having, it may be necessary to lose everything else” ~Devlin, Bernadette
Searching for serenity
Slowly strolling down a lane of old memories
Ugly memories speckling the sidewalk of her life
Shadows that follow her, remind her of a dark world.
Days of old
Like ashes, windswept and spread out at sea, they softly signal the passage of time.
A death
A rebirth
The Phoenix has emerged.
Safety, at last
She has removed the tight noose he had looped and forced her to wear.
The rope burns are slowly disappearing.
Years of making her feel powerless, controlled like a marionette,
His choke hold can no longer suffocate.
A heavy breath and a deep sigh releases yesterday’s pain.
She’s starting over.
She can breathe easy now, but is very aware of potholes waiting in her path.
Her new life may not be smooth, but it’s better.
She paid a high price for freedom,
but it’s a valued gift that money can’t buy.
She’s lost everything but is not bitter for she finds serenity in solitude.
Blissful solitude is awakening a new spirit.
A soul that floats, no longer chained down
But sitting in night’s darkness she senses her world changing quickly
And this frightens her.
She looks up to heaven with knees knocking and whispers “why?”
She needs to know why her life had to be so hard.
She waits for an answer.
She listens and senses the power of silence.
The silence settles her stormy soul.
It helps her see clearly.
She understands.
Like a lighthouse leading sailors home
she is shining, stubborn and strong.
Staring straight into the eye of life’s hurricane
She dares it to try to dim her shining.
She’s up for the fight.
This silent light is what guided her through the choppy water.
Her sea legs, weak after falling many times, refuse to buckle from the force of life’s chaotic waves.
A solitary soul, courageous, pure and faithful
She’s too proud and refuses to stay down.
She will continue to rise up and shine, like the lighthouse.
Morning follows darkness and worry.
Today she seeks solitude.
On her walk, she stops to listen.
She smiles at nature and absorbs the beauty of silence.
She reflects in solitude
thinking about the year gone by
• death of a dark world
• unemployment
• foreclosure
• no money
• hard times
Her job may be lost and her home is being taken away
but this will not break her.
She is a light house, a bright beacon with hope.
She has lost material things, but not the essence of life.
She hasn’t lost what truly matters.
She’s given the chance to begin again.
A new start to be treasured, not regretted by the monetary sacrifice.
She stands tall, proud, and solitary
waiting patiently, still not knowing where she’ll rest her hat and call home.
She’s alone but not lonely.
She’s very grateful.
Her new world is waiting and she’s determined to find it.
The power of heaven’s silence, found only in pure solitude,
will be her compass and lead her home.
She’s ready.

A wonderful refreshing poem. I love the poems that shy not from painting life as it is; real, unglamorous and often ugly.
You have done a marvelous job and i love the strain of positivity that runs through your poem.
“She hasn’t lost what truly matters.”

Luanne,
I can’t tell you how deeply this touched my heart.
“Staring straight into the eye of Life’s hurricane, she dares it to try to take her shining away.”
My grace…
Beautiful!
