I should have looked both ways.

Panning in a stream that wasn’t real

Just an illusion

A fake love I believed in,

Finding out too late it was never true.

It was nothing but Fool’s gold.

Not genuine; an imitation

Like the muddy stream, your confused message clouded the reality that was

Sign up? What did you mean?

Where was the war draft?

Who said you were the one I had chosen to battle my foe?

I had told you a million times.

I’m a lighthouse and stand alone. Don’t want or need any Keeper.

You imagined it all. You were never asked or expected to be.

You still carry her ball and chain.

I am free and will never tie anyone to me.

Your past haunted you and I had to pay for her sins.

How unfair; like finding out our love wasn’t rich at all

Only fake like fool’s gold;

Time passes, mirages disappear, but I’ll never forget the thrill I felt

when I believed I had hit oil in the desert.

Although sadness followed, I’ll never regret

Those happy times were worth today’s tears

For I gained knowledge of what I want, and you don’t fit the bill.

Gold is strong and can be counted on.

Fool’s gold is just a weak imitation.
